Detecting and attributing Australian climate change: a review

نویسنده

  • Neville Nicholls
چکیده

Climate has always varied. In Australia, the impact of the El Niño – Southern Oscillation on variations in rainfall over centuries has been documented (e.g. Nicholls 1988, 1989). Other natural, internal processes also affect climate on different time-scales. As well, volcanic activity is known to cause cooling of the surface temperature, and variations in solar activity and orbital changes that affect the interception of sunlight by the earth also have a clear effect. Such impacts on the climate, i.e. those due to natural internal climate processes, and those resulting from natural external forcings (such as orbital variations), will continue to Aust. Met. Earth as Humans’ Habitat: Global Climate Change and the Health of Populations

Human-induced climate change, with such rapid and continuing global-scale warming, is historically unprecedented and signifies that human pressures on Earth’s life-supporting natural systems now exceed the planet’s bio-geo-capacity. The risks from climate change to health and survival in populations are diverse, as are the social and political ramifications. Although attributing observed health...

REVIEW ARTICLE Detecting and Attributing External Influences on the Climate System: A Review of Recent Advances

This paper reviews recent research that assesses evidence for the detection of anthropogenic and natural external influences on the climate. Externally driven climate change has been detected by a number of investigators in independent data covering many parts of the climate system, including surface temperature on global and large regional scales, ocean heat content, atmospheric circulation, a...

Submission To The Garnaut Climate Change Review

I welcome the interim findings of the review: That climate change is a threat to the Australian economy and the environment on which it depends. That climate change is a threat which needs a swifter and more optimum response than has been currently considered by Australian governments so as to establish and develop newly appropriate production and economic human activities and behaviour whilst ...

A protocol to articulate and quantify uncertainties in climate change detection and attribution

This work develops and describes a formal probabilistic protocol via which the process of identifying lines of evidence for climate change, assessing likely causes for changes in the evidence, and combining the lines of evidence to make overall attributions of cause to greenhouse gases can be made. This open and detailed model of the detection and attribution process is designed to identify iss...
